Mermaid Coloring Inspiration
Are you looking for some coloring inspiration and creativity? Below I have colored my favorite page from this series. I hope it inspires kids of all ages to create their own magical underwater masterpiece.
The Mermaid Princess
For this underwater scene, I wanted to create a cute mermaid sitting in a large shell throne holding a sleek trident. To make the mermaid stand out I placed her in the center, and then covered the background with the ocean floor and the deep ocean.
To color this page I have used a generous mix of warm, cool and neutral colors to help bring out the vibrancy of the ocean and mermaid. Her scales and shell garments are colored using gradients so that the reflection of light underwater is pronounced. I decided to keep her shell throne simple shades of pink, so it doesn’t steal any attention from the mermaid!
If you decide to color this illustration, pay lots of attention to the mermaid’s tail. This will be the most eye-catching part of the page, so you can use beautiful combinations such as bright blues, greens, purples, or pinks. You can also blend two or three shades together to create a shimmering effect.
Once you have colored the tail, focus on bringing the ocean to life. Coral reefs can be bright orange, red or purple. Seaweed can be different shades of green. Use light blue to color around the bubbles. For the water, try coloring darker blue near the bottom of the page and lighter blue near the top. This creates depth and makes your mermaid look like she’s really swimming underwater.
You can also try adding micro details to the sand on the ocean floor through shapes like circles in darker colors.
