Axolotl and Starfish Buddies
When I was designing this coloring page, I wanted to highlight the naturally charming personality of an axolotl in a fun way. Rather than showing him in a generic scene, I imagined it floating peacefully underwater with a starfish friend. I think this helps give the character a playful feel.
The axolotl is placed in the centre as the main focus of the illustration. The rest of the elements, such as the surrounding bubbles, sea plants, and coral, help to frame the character and create an underwater scene without distracting the viewer from the main subject.
For the color palette, soft pink tones are used for the axolotl. The warm pink helps the subject to stand out against the cool blues and teals of the underwater background. For the water, different shades of blue are used to create depth and give the scene a peaceful aquatic atmosphere.
Green is used for the sea plants to add freshness, and beige tones for the sand, which helps to balance the cool colors. A warm golden-orange is used for the starfish, which creates a subtle contrast and helps to draw attention.
This is a great coloring page to experiment with blending, textures, and underwater lighting.
Start with the axolotl by using a light pink base color. Then add darker pink tones around the edges, beneath the arms and along the tail. Blend the colors to create a soft and smooth appearance. Deeper pink can be used for the gills to make them pop.
For the underwater background, try a soft centre gradient technique by blending dark blue around the edges and light blue near the center. This will help to create depth and make the main subject stand out. Tiny highlights around the bubbles will make them appear transparent and floating.
Try irregular short strokes for the coral to create an organic texture and use long strokes for the sea plants following the direction of the leaves. On the starfish, tiny dots and subtle patterns will make it look more detailed and interesting.
For the final touch, imagine sunlight filtering down from above. Keep the upper surfaces of every element slightly lighter and add deep shadows underneath them.
